米作は、清親の門下で師譲りの洗練された色彩感覚と光と影を捉える繊細な表現力を身につけた。日清戦争の際には多くの戦争錦絵を手がけたが、単に戦場の激しさを描くのではなく、雪や月明かり、煙の表現などに師のスタイルを受け継いだ近代的な光のテクニックを活かしている。
戦争絵はプロパガンダ的な目的、つまり軍の支持を勝ち取り維持し続ける目的を持っていたため、日本軍やその行動の支持を高める内容となっている。
