川中島の戦いは 1553 年（天文 22 年）～ 1564 年（永禄 7 年）にかけて、「武田信玄」と「上杉謙信」の間で 5 回行なわれた。作品には 1561 年（永禄 4 年）の第 4 次「川中島の戦い」が描かれている。合戦のさなか、「武田信玄」と「上杉謙信」両陣営の旗本が入り乱れての大混戦となる。武田信玄の身辺が手薄になったと見て、上杉謙信は風のように武田信玄の本陣へ切り込んでいく。馬を駆る上杉謙信の勇猛果敢な姿が描かれ、川中島の戦いで一番の名場面と言われている。
国綱は豊国の門人で作画期は文政から万延の頃にかけてとされ、武者絵等に優品が多い。

The Battles of Kawanakajima were the 5 battles fought in the Sengoku period of Japan between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province from 1553 to 1564.
The fourth battle is depicted in this artwork.
Kunitsuna is one of the pupils of Toyokuni. He especially preferred to use the warrior motif.
