深い雪の中歩を進める親子は、絶世の美女と言われた常盤御前とその息子たちである。
自ら歩くのは今若と乙若、そして常盤御前の腕にはまだ幼い牛若が眠っている。
源義朝が平清盛に敗れたことにより大和国へと逃れた4人であったが、常盤御前の母が捕らえられたことを知り、悩んだ末に雪の中都へと引き返す一場面を描く。都に戻ってしまえば清盛に子供たちもろとも殺される可能性があり、後ろを振り返る御前の眼差しには哀しみと覚悟が入り交じっている様にも見える。

The mother and children depicted in this artwork are Tokiwa-Gozen, who was described as a matchless beautiful woman, and her sons.
The boys who are walking themselves are Imawaka and Otowaka, and the sleeping baby in Tokiwa-Gozen's arm is Ushiwaka.
Minamoto no Yoshitomo, the children's father, was lost at the Heiji rebellion, and Tokiwa-Gozen and the children escaped from the capital to Yamato-no-Kuni.
This artwork is the depiction of the scene of the returning way from the Yamato-no-Kuni to the capital for surrender to Taira no Kiyomori to help her mother who is arrested by Kiyomori.
She knew that they will be killed if they surrender to Kiyomori, so we can see the complex emotion of sadness and preparedness in her eyes.
