川上澄生は大正後期より、英語教師をする傍ら、本格的な木版画制作を始める。下絵、彫り、刷りまですべて自分で行う創作版画で、仲間や教え子とともに版画誌を刊行した。風景や人物、静物、詩画集等を経て、戦後は一貫して南蛮と文明開化をテーマに版画を制作した。文明開化の入り口となった貿易港・横浜は、川上澄生の故郷でもある。

Kawakami Sumio began making woodblock prints in the late Taisho period (1912-1926) while teaching English. After publishing landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and collections of poems, he consistently produced prints after the war with the theme of Nanban and the opening of Japan to civilization. The trading port of Yokohama, which served as the gateway to civilization and enlightenment, is also the hometown of Kawakami Sumio.
