Okuyama Gihachiro was selected for the first time for the Japan Sosaku-Hanga Association Exhibition in 1928. In the same year, his skills were recognized, and he worked as an advertising artist for the Japan Woolen Advertising Department. Then, he produced numerous commercial advertisements—such as posters and labels for Nikka Whisky.
In 1936, he studied under the ukiyo-e researcher Ishii Kendo, and focused on the revival of traditional techniques of Japanese print. In 1949, he began running his own Japan Print Research Institute and started producing woodblock prints with a division of labor between painter, engraver, and printer, similar to ukiyoe.
He also reproduced woodblock prints of impressionist' paintings, such as Van Gogh and Cézanne which shows Okuyama's inquisitive mind toward printmaking.
