200年にわたる鎖国が終わり、横浜港が開港されると、様々な国の人々や文化が一気に日本に流れ込み、浮世絵師達はすかさず作品にしていった。
この作品では、西洋風の室内で、食事会や音楽に興じる外国人が描かれている。建物の外にこちらをのぞき込む日本人の姿が見え、興味津々なこの人物に絵師達の姿も重なる。僅かに見えた暮らしぶり。よく分からなかったものは見知ったものや想像で補われ、その頓珍漢な組み合わせがかえって大変面白い。

芳員は国芳の門人で、作画期は嘉永頃から明治3年頃にかけてである。武者絵、花鳥画、草双紙の挿絵などを描いた。横浜開港後は異人の生活風俗に興味を持ち、横浜絵の先駆者として数多くの作品を手掛けた。

When the 200-year isolation of Japan ended, and the port of Yokohama was opened, people and cultures from many different countries arrived in Japan at once, and Ukiyo-e artists were quick to depict them in their works.
This work depicts foreigners enjoying a dinner party and music in a Western-style room. A Japanese figure can be seen peering out of the house. The Ukiyo-e painters must have been like this curious figure. A slight glimpse of Western life. What was not clear was supplemented by what was familiar and what was imagined, and the unusual combination of them are very interesting.

Yoshikazu was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and was active from the end of Edo era to 1970. He produced the work of the warriors in the battles, Flower and Bird work, and illustrations for Kusazoshi (books). After opening the port of Yokohama, he became interested in the lifestyle and customs of foreigners and produced many works as a pioneer of Yokohama-e.
