九仙山は中国福建省にある山で、名前の由来には諸説あるものの、九人の仙人が暮らした山として知られている。
山頂に置かれた仙人の碁盤の伝説は広く流布されており、掲載作品にもその描写が見られる。掲載作品は歌舞伎演目として知られる「国性爺合戦（こくせんやかっせん）」と九仙山の伝説を組み合わせたと見受けられ、絵の中心には中国と日本にルーツを持つ主人公和藤内（わとうない）と思われる「和」の字を腹に記した人物が勇猛に戦う姿が描かれている。

豊春は、歌川派の祖で、芝宇田川町に住んでいたことから歌川と名乗ったといわれる。豊春は中国の眼鏡絵や西洋の銅版画を浮世絵に模写して研究を重ね、やがて遠近法を習得。それをもって江戸の浮絵などを描いた。

Jiuxian Mountain is located in Fujian Province, China, and is known as the mountain where nine hermits lived. (There are several theories about the origin of the name.)
The legend of the Hermit's Chessboard placed at the top of the mountain is well known and is depicted in the print shown here. This print seems to be a combination of the legend of Jiuxian Mountain and the well-known Kabuki play "Kokusenyakassen." It depicts a figure with the character "和" written on his belly, fighting bravely in the center of the print, which seems to be the main character Watonai, who has roots in China and Japan.

Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814) was the founder of the Utagawa school and is said to have taken the name Utagawa from his residence in Shiba-Udagawa-cho. Toyoharu studied Chinese perspective paintings and Western copperplate engravings by copying them onto Ukiyo-e and mastered the art of perspective. Later, he painted Uki-e and other works in Edo.
