日本初の鉄道が開業したのは、およそ150年前のこと。文明国の象徴でもあった蒸気機関車は急速に国内に広がった。見たことの無い新しい技術に人々は驚き、周囲は見物人であふれていたという。浮世絵師たちも人混みの中きっと夢中で描いたことだろう。

芳虎は国芳の門人で、幕末から文明開化期にかけて活躍した絵師の一人である。芳虎が最も活躍したのは明治維新前後の目新しい風俗を描いた横浜絵や開化絵の分野で、当時の多くの日本人にとっては未知の外国風景など多くの作品を残した。

Steam locomotives, a symbol of civilization, spread rapidly throughout Japan.
People were amazed at the new technology they had never seen before, and the surrounding area was filled with spectators. Ukiyoe artists must have been absorbed in sketching in the crowds.

Yoshitora was a disciple of Kuniyoshi and one of the prominent artists active from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. His most notable works were in the genre of Yokohama-e and Kaika-e, depicting the novel customs emerging around the time of the Meiji Restoration. He left behind numerous works featuring unfamiliar foreign landscapes, which intrigued many Japanese of that era.
