木曽街道六十九次は、コマ絵に各地の風景、本絵に有名人物を描いた、国芳らしい生きいきとしたシリーズ。本作では、南総里見八犬伝の登場人物である犬塚信乃にちなみ、題字には子犬の装飾があしらわれている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

69 Stations of Kiso Kaido is a lively series typical of Kuniyoshi, featuring small inset pictures of local landscapes together with famous figures in the main design. In this work, inspired by Inuzuka Shino from The Tale of the Eight Dogs of Satomi (Nanso Satomi Hakkenden), the title panel is decorated with playful puppies.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", it created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
