西洋風の装いに身を包んだ女性の、独特な眼差しが印象的な一枚。画面の左方を見つめるその姿は、今にも何かを語り出しそうである。彼女の強い存在感が、見る者の想像をかき立てる。

ポールジャクレーはフランス、パリの生まれで、3歳の時に来日。日本文化を学び、油絵・デッサンを黒田清輝と久米桂一郎から、日本画を輝方・蕉園に学んだ。
昭和6年に藤懸静也の勧めにより木版画の制作を始めると、昭和8年には自ら若礼（ジャクレー）版画研究所を設立し、彫師、摺師と共同生活をしながら166点の新版画の制作を続けた。ジャクレーの木版画は国内外の欧米人を主な顧客として頒布会形式で販売され、戦後には、駐留米軍関係者たちによって競って買い求められたという。

A woman in Western-style clothing catches the eye with her unique gaze. Looking off to the left of the image, she seems just about to speak. Her strong presence sparks the viewer’s imagination.

Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris, France, and came to Japan when he was three. He studied Japanese culture, learned oil painting and drawing from Kuroda Seiki and Kume Keiichiro, and Japanese painting from Terukata and Shoen.
In 1931, he began making woodblock prints on the advice of Fujikake Shizuya. In 1933, he established his 若礼 (Jacoulet) Printmaking Institute and continued producing 166 new prints while living with an engraver and printer. Jacoulet's woodblock prints were sold in distribution style, with Europeans and Americans in Japan and people abroad as his main customers. After World War II, US military personnel stationed in Japan competed to buy his works.
