「今様擬源氏」は、五十四帖からなる源氏物語を当世風にアレンジしたシリーズで、芳幾初の大規模な揃物となった。巻名や作中の和歌から想起されたシーンが描かれており、江戸の人々はその連想を楽しんだのであろう。
芳幾は国芳の門下で、芳年の兄弟子にあたる。国芳が没した後に、芳幾は遊女屋風俗などを描いて幕末から明治初期にかけての浮世絵師の第一人者のひとりとなった。

The “Modern Version of Genji” series was the first large scale Yoshiiki production, a series of 54 volumes of The Tale of Genji arranged in a modern style.
The scenes are inspired by the names of the scrolls and the waka poems in the tale, and the people of Edo would have enjoyed the allusions.
Yoshiiku was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and he studied with Yoshitoshi. After Kuniyoshi's death, he became one of the leading ukiyo-e artists from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period by depicting the manners and customs of brothels.
