めでたい芸能である祝言舞踊「式三番（三番叟）」を、美しい女性たちに呼び換えて描いた見立絵の作品である。本来は狂言師や歌舞伎役者が演じる威勢の良い三番叟の舞を、華やかな振袖をまとった若い女性たちが優雅に演じる趣向になっている。烏帽子や扇といった小道具を配し、豊国特有の粋で健康的な美人像と江戸庶民の風流な遊び心が凝縮された作品。

This print reimagines the auspicious ceremonial dance Sanbaso by replacing its traditional performers with elegant young women. Originally performed with vigorous movements by Kyogen actors or Kabuki performers, the Sanbaso dance is here gracefully enacted by beautifully dressed women in sumptuous long-sleeved kimono. Traditional stage props such as Eboshi caps and folding fans reinforce the allusion, while Toyokuni's signature portrayal of healthy, stylish beauties and the playful sophistication of Edo popular culture are brought together in a delightfully refined composition.
