一ノ谷の戦いにおいて源平両軍が膠着状態に陥る中、平家方は小舟に乗せた美女に、飾り扇を高く掲げさせて送り出した。それは単純な挑発ではあったが、源氏の武士たちにとっては、名折れとなるのを避けるために無視できないものであった。兵たちは那須為隆や畠山重忠など腕利きの弓の名手を推挙したが、彼らの多くはそれまでの戦いで負傷していた拒否し、為隆は弟の那須宗隆を候補として挙げた。
宗隆が海へと漕ぎ出すと、源氏の兵たちは彼を鼓舞し、その背中を後押しした。仲間の名誉と戦いの行方という重責が、彼の肩にずっしりとのしかかる。彼らにとって、それは成功か死か、という瀬戸際であった。矢が放たれた瞬間、海面は一瞬静まり返り、飾り扇は渦を巻いて深海へと沈んでいった。それは驚愕のあまりの静寂に包まれる中、成し遂げられた歴史的偉業であった。
芳虎は国芳の門人で、幕末から文明開化期にかけて活躍した絵師の一人である。芳虎が最も活躍したのは明治維新前後の目新しい風俗を描いた横浜絵や開化絵の分野で、当時の日本人にとって未知だった外国風景をはじめ多くの作品を残した。

In the midst of a stalemate between the Genji and Heikei troops in the Battle of Ichinotani, the Heikei sent out a beautiful woman on a small boat, with a decorative fan hoisted up in the air. The provocation was simple, but one the Genji troops could not ignore lest they dishonor their title. The soldiers called upon skilled archers such as Hatakeyama Shigetada and Nasu Tametaka, most of them wounded in the earlier battles, until Nasu Tametaka raised his brother Nasu Munetaka as a candidate.
As Nasu Munetaka set out into the waters, the Genji troops shouted and rallied behind him, the weight of his comrade’s honor and the collective outcome of the battle growing heavier upon his shoulders. It was success or death to them all. The sea stilled, only for a moment as his arrow flew by, the decorative fan spiraling down into the depths of the ocean—a monumental feat, captured with the deafening silence of astonishment.
Yoshitora, a disciple of Kuniyoshi, was one of the leading artists active from the late Edo period into the Meiji period. He was especially known for his Yokohama-e and Kaika-e, which depicted the novel customs and fashions emerging around the Meiji Restoration. His works included numerous depictions of foreign landscapes unfamiliar to most Japanese of the time.
