This work depicts the famous Kameido Umeyashiki, long celebrated as one of Edo's most renowned plum blossom viewing spots. In contrast to the bold composition of Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Kameido Umeyashiki, Kiyochika focuses instead on the subtle interplay of light and shadow at dusk. The celebrated Garyubai ("Reclining Dragon Plum") tree, with its sweeping branches, and the visitors gathered beneath it are enveloped in a quiet, atmospheric stillness. Through delicate gradations of light and darkness, Kiyochika beautifully captures the tranquility and poetic mood of early spring.
