This print depicts an anecdote of the boyhood hardship of Ogyu Sorai, the influential Confucian scholar of the mid-Edo period who founded the Ken'en school of philosophy. Following his father's exile, young Sorai was relocated to Kazusa Province (present-day Chiba Prefecture). Despite being isolated from teachers and study companions, he devoted himself relentlessly to self-study, reading continuously under severe conditions. By the time he returned to Edo, he had already laid the foundation of his immense erudition—a story that speaks volumes about his unshakeable determination.
This work originates from Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition, a celebrated Meiji-era series created to inspire self-improvement and moral resolve. By focusing on Sorai’s formative years when he pursued knowledge against all odds to become a leading thinker of Japan, the print emphasizes the vital importance of diligence and steadfast ambition. Kiyochika’s masterly handle of light and shadow beautifully illuminates the young scholar's sincere posture as he quietly studies by lamplight.
