ICHIKAWA Shiori Solo Exhibition "Records of Misunderstanding"

Gallery Soumei-do is pleased to present Records of Misunderstanding, a solo exhibition by Ichikawa Shiori.
Ichikawa has long sought to reflect on the issues within human society through a lens of objectivity and compassion, by depicting creatures that struggle in the human world. Rather than portraying people directly, she chooses to explore human society through the lives of animals and other beings. She explains this approach as follows:
“When we observe animals, we tend to search for meaning in their gestures and expressions. Although their ways of sensing the world differ from ours, and they do not possess language to explain themselves, we can’t help but project emotions onto them and try to understand them with a certain tenderness. I often think about what truly connects all humans—beyond language, culture, or religion. That feeling we get when we try to understand a creature whose experience of the world is entirely different from our own—perhaps that’s a key to making this world a better place.”
Titled Records of Misunderstanding, this exhibition showcases a collection of paintings and prints based on moments the artist happened to witness—reimagined and reinterpreted through her own lens. These include scenes such as a gourmet cockroach and a butterfly who can’t stop its courtship dance despite distrusting its partner. Each piece reflects the artist’s thoughtful yet playful interpretation of “misunderstandings.”
We warmly invite you to enjoy the exhibition.
