Sadafusa

Sadabusa was a ukiyo-e artist active from the 1820s through the early 1850s, during the late Edo period. A pupil of Kunisada, he is known for an elegant and flamboyant style inherited from his master.

The core of his artistic production lay in beauty and actor prints, genres that enjoyed immense popularity among the townspeople of Edo. In his beauty in particular, Sadabusa faithfully and gracefully carried forward Kunisada’s established ideal of feminine beauty—women with slightly upturned eyes and softly rounded features—demonstrating his close involvement with the forefront of popular culture.

One especially intriguing aspect of Sadabusa’s career is that, after training and working in Edo, he later relocated to Osaka, where he also made his mark within the Osaka print tradition. While introducing Edo’s refined aesthetic to the Kansai region, he adapted his style to local tastes, producing powerful and expressive actor prints suited to Osaka audiences.
