Shunsho

Shunsho was a ukiyo-e artist active from the 1760s to the 1790s during the mid-Edo period and was the founder of the Katsukawa school. He revolutionized the world of actor prints by establishing a realistic style that captured the distinct individuality of each actor.
Before his time, actor prints generally featured standardized faces, but Shunsho accurately captured the specific facial features of individual actors, bringing a sense of realism to their stage presence. This approach significantly influenced later artists such as Shunko and Sharaku.
Additionally, he demonstrated extraordinary talent in original paintings of beauties, and his elegant, sophisticated style earned him high acclaim. His school produced many masters, including Katsushika Hokusai, highlighting Shunsho’s critically important role in the history of ukiyo-e.
