KOUN was an ukiyo-e artist active from the Meiji to Taisho periods, and a member of the lineage of Gekko’s pupils. Inheriting Gekko’s sketch-based approach rooted in close observation, Koun pursued woodblock prints as a form of pure pictorial expression and engaged with themes closely aligned with nihonga painting.
In his depictions of figures and landscapes alike, a calm, objective gaze consistently prevails. Within his restrained realism, a quiet lyricism emerges, giving his works a subdued yet enduring emotional resonance.
