「仮名手本忠臣蔵」は、人形浄瑠璃のヒット作から生まれた歌舞伎演目の金字塔。その物語のスケールは、単なる敵討ち成功譚の領域を軽々と超える。権力の座にある老獪な男の、好色と驕りと嫉妬に端を発した一大事件が、何組もの主従、夫婦、親子、兄妹の人生を巻き込み、彼らの運命を変えて行く。数々の名優が工夫を重ね、無数の観客が涙した、美しく、面白く、壮大な傑作である。

Chushingura is a monumental work, one of the three plays (along with Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy and Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees) considered the pinnacle of puppet-based Kabuki drama. It is ultimately a story of revenge but goes well beyond the realm of that genre, portraying a series of momentous incidents triggered by the sexual conceit of a cunning villain and encompassing masters and retainers, husbands and wives, parents and children, and brothers and sisters. Kabuki’s greatest actors have honed their craft on these roles for countless audiences over the years. A beautiful and grand masterpiece.
