国周は周信及び豊国三代の門人で、小島烏水によって「明治の写楽」と称せられる。3枚続に役者一人を描くという新しい構成は国周が創始したとされる。明治期における役者絵浮世絵師の代表的存在であり、作品数も多く、明治演劇史の資料としても大変価値がある。
国周は自らも認めているほどの変わった性格をしていたという。住まいと妻を変えることが癖で、本人によると転居は117回であり、同じく転居の多かった北斎と比べ「絵は北斎には及ばないが、転居数では勝っている」と誇っていたという。妻も40人余り変え、長続きすることは無かった。酒と遊びが大好きで、画料が入っても宵越しの金は持たないとばかりにすぐ使ってしまい、晩年は着物一枚で過ごし舞台に出る役者をスケッチする「中見」の際には版元から着物を貸してもらうほどだったという。しかし困っている人を見ると助けずにはいられず、時には来客のものまで与えてしまうという非常識ぶりを発揮した。

浪花の俠気の男たちとその妻たちの物語。主人公は堺の魚売り団七。ケンカが元で入牢したが、出牢の折には女房お梶と幼い息子、老俠客の三婦が出迎えてくれた。ところが、団七は恩人につながる女を助けるため強欲な舅を誤って殺害。親殺しの罪は重い。
義兄弟の徳兵衛は、団七の命を助けようと心をくだくが…。

Kunichika was a pupil of Chikanobu (周信) and ToyokuniⅢ, and was called as "Sharaku in Meiji".
He was a pioneer of the triptych of actor Ukiyo-e and is one of the most important Ukiyo-e artists who depicted the kabuki actors. Since he left various of kabuki prints, these are also worth in the study field of kabuki play archives.
His character was sometimes described as an odd person, not only from others but also by himself. For instance, he had changed the houses and wives many times. He had changed houses for 117 times. He said. "My painting is not as good as Hokusai's, however, I'm superior to Hokusai in the number of times of moving houses."
He had married with over 40 women, and it had never lasted.
He loves alcohol and women and he spent money wastefully, and there is an episode that he had to borrow the clothes from the publisher for the work of sketching the kabuki actors.
He was also a merciful person, so he couldn't ignore if someone needs help. He sometimes gave something prepared for the guests to someone else.

The fishmonger Danshichi, newly released from prison, soon gets in trouble again when he rushes to a woman’s rescue and inadvertently kills his own father-in-law. The grisly murder takes place in real mud and water, creating a hyper-reality on the stage, as a joyous summer festival parade incongruously marches nearby.
