川瀬巴水は清方の門人で深水の「近江八景」に影響を受けて版画家に転向する。
巴水は新版画の第一人者として活躍し、約40年にわたる画業のなかで、600点を超える作品を発表した。
「巴水ブルー」と称される青色は巴水の特徴的な色彩で、水や空気を表現したさまざまな青色は、日本人のみならず、スティーブ・ジョブズをはじめとした多くの外国人を魅了している。
日暮れの平河門前の堀を、3羽のユリカモメが渡ってゆく。沈みゆく太陽と対比するようにすでに門の前には明かりが灯されているようだ。夕焼けと街頭のあたたかな光が同時に水面に映り込み、空間全体を包み込むような青色の中で美しく映えている。

Kawase Hasui was a pupil of Kiyokata, and he was affected by "The Eight Views of Omi" which was created by Ito Shinsui.
He became one of the most famous Shinhanga artists and left more than 600 artworks over about 40 years.
He preferred to use blue on his works, and it is often called "Hasui Blue". His excellent techniques and expressions have fascinated not only Japanese people but also people from all over the world, for instance, Steve Jobs.
3 pewit gulls are flying over the moat, in front of the Hirakawa Gate, in the imperial palace.
The deep and beautiful blue tone is covering the whole atmosphere of this artwork, and it highlights the warm light color of the sunset and the lamp that reflect on the water.
