豊国は歌川派の開祖である豊春の門下の絵師で、透明感のある爽やかな作品によって役者絵の世界を席巻した。作画期は天明6年から文政7年までで、寛政6年には和泉屋市兵衛から「役者舞台之姿絵」の連作が出版された。これは単調な背景に浮き上がる当時の人気役者の舞台姿を描いたもので、清新な画風が好評であった。また、豊国は時代の要求に応じた粋と侠艶の婀娜な女性美を描く歌川派様式を創り出し、文化期になると、粋の美へと画風が変化した。多くの門弟を育て、幕末に至る歌川派の興隆をもたらした。

Toyokuni was a pupil of Toyoharu, the founder of the Utagawa school, and was an essential person in the field of Yakusha-e (portrayals of Kabuki actors). His painting period was from 1876 to Bunsei 7, and in Kansei 6, Izumiya Ichibei (publisher) published a series of '役者舞台之姿絵.' That series depicted famous actors of the time in their roles, which floated against flat backgrounds and were well received. Toyokuni also established the foundation of the Utagawa school's style, which depicted women's beauty in a charming manner and chivalrous charm in response to the demands of the mass of the times. By the Bunka period, his style had changed to the beauty of chic. He trained many pupils and brought about the rise of the Utagawa school towards the end of the Edo period.
