琴棋書画（きんきしょが）とは、中国古来の文人における必須の教養や風流事を意味する。「琴」、「囲碁」、「書」、「絵」の四芸のことで、日本では様々な作品のモチーフとして多く見ることができる。
こちらは源氏物語の題材を江戸時代の様相で描いた源氏絵にあたる。美しい着物を身に纏うやや浮世離れした様子は、まさに源氏絵らしい。
豊国三代は豊国の門人で国貞と名乗った。天保15年豊国二代を称した。（実際には豊国三代）作画期が長く、その作品の量も膨大なものになっている。特に役者絵・美人画等の人物の描写に定評があり、当時の浮世絵界を風靡するほどの勢いと力を持っていた。

Qín qí shū huà (琴棋書画) refers to the essential culture and customs of the ancient Chinese literati. It refers to the four arts of 琴 (harp), 囲碁 (Board game), 書 (calligraphy), and 画 (painting), and can be found as motifs in many works of art in Japan.
This work is a Genji-e (Genji pictures) depicting a subject from the Tale of Genji. The Tale of Genji was written in Heian-era, but Genji-e was produced in the Edo era, and the characters are depicted in the fashions and manners of the Edo period. The depiction of Genji enjoying a day dressed in fancy kimono is typical of Genji-e.
Toyokuni III was a pupil of Toyokuni and took the name Kunisada. He took the name Toyokuni II in 1844. (In reality, Toyokuni III was the third generation of Toyokuni.) His painting period was long, and the volume of his works was enormous. He was especially known for his portrayals of actors and beautiful women, and he had the power and vigor to dominate the ukiyo-e world at that time.
