一見すると奉納された御神楽面が描かれた作品と見えるが、それぞれの顔をよく見ると当時の人気役者の似顔絵となっている。
天保の改革により庶民の贅沢が取り締まられている中、天保13年には役者絵・美人画が禁止された。その苦境を逆手にとった国芳ならではの機知に富んだ作品だ。

国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に及ばずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称されるほどの人気絵師となった。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力により、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

At first glance, this is a depiction of masks of Mikagura, which is the Noh mask when they performed at the imperial palace, but a closer look at each face reveals that they are portraits of famous actors of the time.
When Tempo-Reforms, the political reform in the Tempo era, which clamped down on the extravagance of the people, was issued, portraits of actors, and portraits of beautiful women were banned. Kuniyoshi took advantage of this predicament in this witty work.

Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden," which created a sensation and made him famous. After that, he was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi," and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
