玉川堤の満開の桜の下、賑わう人々を描いた3枚続の作品。現在の新宿御苑正門あたりを描いており、奥には当時賑わいを見せた内藤新宿の宿の2階から桜を楽しむ人々の姿も見える。玉川堤の桜は名所江戸百景でも描かれているが、名所江戸百景では縦構図であった風景を本作では3枚続にしたことで、川沿いに立ち並ぶ宿と桜並木が長く続く様子がよくわかる。

広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下となった。初め、美人画や役者絵を描いたが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに、数々の風景画を制作、人気絵師として名を馳せた。

This triptych work depicts busy people under the cherry blossoms in full bloom on the Tamagawa River Bank.
This area is around the main gate of Shinjuku Gyoen Garden in the present day. The residences on the other side of the river are Naito-Shinjuku, an inn town. The people on the second floor are also enjoying the cherry blossoms.
The cherry blossoms on the Tamagawa River Bank were also depicted in Meisho Edo Hyakkei (100 Views of Famous Places of Edo), but the vertical composition in Meisho Edo Hyakkei was replaced by a triptych in this work, which tells us the details of the inns lining along the river and the long rows of cherry trees.

Hiroshige was born in 1776, the son of Ando Genemon, a fireman on the Yashirosu river bank in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. At first, Hiroshige painted beauties and portraits of actors. He became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" series.
