青物魚軍勢大合戦之図は、擬人化された「野菜」と「魚」の合戦を描いた作品。
安政５年、コレラが長崎から侵入して日本中に伝染し、「安政コレラ」と呼ばれた。この作品の「青物」はコレラを予防する食物、「魚」はコレラを伝染する食物で、両者の戦いを表しているとされている。
それだけでも興味深いが、実際にはこれは江戸幕府内の「南紀派」と「一ツ橋派」の争いについて、野菜や魚が様々な藩に置き換わって当時の世相を暗に示したという、風刺画の側面がある。

広景は広重の門人で、現在確認されている作品は65点。作画期は安政6年から文久元年までの僅か2年8ヶ月で、その多くが安政6年と万延元年の2年間に集中している。広景が安政6年に発表した「青物魚軍勢大合戦之図」は、前年に流行したコレラと将軍継嗣問題を題材とした世相を示していることから幕府から危険視された。更に、広景はこの図や諸国の城の絵などを横浜の異人に送った不穏な者であるとして糾弾される。幕府は江戸市中の家主に対し広景の住所を知らせるよう訴え、隠せば同罪だというお触れを出した。広景の短い画業も、身の危険を感じての行動とも取れる。

"The Great Battle of the Bluefish Armies" depicts a battle between anthropomorphic vegetables and fish.
In 1858, cholera entered Japan from Nagasaki and spread throughout the country, and was known as 'Ansei cholera'. The 'vegetables' in this work prevent cholera, while the 'fish' are food that transmits cholera, and the battle between the two is depicted.
While it is interesting to look at the characters depicted, there is, in fact, an aspect of satire in this work.
In fact, various clans were replaced by vegetables and fishes, reporting on the state of affairs at the time regarding the struggle between the two factions within the Edo shogunate.

Hirokage was a student of Hiroshige, whose 65 works are currently known. "The Great Battle of the Bluefish Armies," published in 1859, was considered dangerous work by the Shogunate. It was because he depicted political subject of the cholera epidemic and the Shogun's successor, which had occurred the previous year. Furthermore, Hirokage was accused of being a disturbed person who sent this drawing and pictures of castles in various countries to a foreigner in Yokohama.
The shogunate appealed to landlords throughout Edo to inform them of Hirokage's address and issued an order that they were equally guilty if they concealed it.
Hirokage's brief painting career could be seen as an act of fear for his safety.
