東海道五十三次は広重の作品が知られるが、この東海道五十三次 絵本駅路鈴（えほんえきろのすず）は、北斎によるものだ。風景というよりも人物や風俗に焦点があてられており、縦の構図が利いた臨場感のある面白い図が多い。
北斎は代表作に「富嶽三十六景」や「北斎漫画」があり、世界的にも著名な画家である。森羅万象を描き、生涯に3万点を超える作品を発表した。若い時から意欲的で、木版画浮世絵のほか肉筆浮世絵においても傑出しており、葛飾派の祖となった後にはフィンセント・ファン・ゴッホなどの印象派画壇の芸術家をはじめ工芸家や音楽家にも影響を与えている。
1999年には、アメリカの雑誌である「ライフ」の企画「この1000年で最も重要な功績を残した世界の人物100人」で、日本人として唯一86位にランクインした。

The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road are known for Hiroshige’s works, but this “53 Stations of the Tokaido Road, Ehon Ekiro no Suzu” series is by Hokusai. The focus is on people and customs rather than scenery, and many pictures are interesting and unique, with a vertical composition.
Hokusai is a world-famous painter whose representative works include "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and "Hokusai Manga." He produced more than 30,000 works in his lifetime.
He was ambitious from a young age and excelled in woodblock Ukiyo-e and handwriting Ukiyo-e. He became the founder of the Katsushika School and later influenced artists of the Impressionist school, such as Vincent Van Gogh, as well as artisans and musicians.
In 1999, he was chosen as one of the "100 Most Important People in the World in the Last 1000 Years" by the American magazine Life. He was the only Japanese who was chosen on the list.
