武田信玄と上杉謙信の激しい覇権争いによる「川中島の戦い」は、10年以上も繰り広げられたが、勝敗は明らかではなく、諸説が語られ、謎の残る合戦として伝えられている。
浮世絵の画題としてしばしば描かれ、天保期に南町奉行の出版許可が下りてからは、国芳をはじめ多くの歌川派が川中島の武者絵を描いた。
この芳艶の「川中島大合戦組討尽」は、全12図ある。

芳艶は国芳の門下で、力強い筆法と彩色の艶麗さが評判となり、それを見た国芳は彼に「芳艶」の号を与えたという。若くして武者絵で才能を発揮して人気を博した芳艶と国輝は良きライバルで、刺青の下絵において競いあい、芳艶なら児雷也、国輝なら狐忠信と並び評された。
ところが30歳を過ぎたころから賭博を好み色街に入り浸ったため破門される。親友で博打仲間だった芳鶴の牢死がきっかけに再び画業に戻ると、師匠の国芳に負けぬほどの迫力ある武者絵を次々と世に送り出した。

The "Battle of Kawanakajima," a fierce struggle for supremacy between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, lasted more than 10 years, but the outcome is not clear. It is said to be a battle that remains a mystery, with various theories being told.
The battle was often depicted as the subject of ukiyo-e, and after the Minamimachi magistrate gave permission for publication during the Tempo period, Kuniyoshi and many other members of the Utagawa school created warrior prints of Kawanakajima.
This "Great Battle of Kawanakajima" series by Yoshitsuya consists of 12 images.

Yoshitsuya was one of the pupils of Kuniyoshi. Since Yoshitsuya drew strong brushwork and had a good sense of the beautiful color combinations, Kuniyoshi named him Yoshitsuya. Tsuya means beauty.
He had a talent for depicting warriors and was a good rival of Kuniteru. They had competed for the technique of the drawing of tattoos. The citizen said, "Yoshitsuya is about Jiraiya, and Kuniteru is about Kitsune Tadanobu."
