怪童丸は後の頼光四天王の一人である坂田公時（金時）の幼名で、昔話に登場する「金太郎」としても知られる。足柄山の山姥の息子として生まれた怪童丸は獣を友に育ち、その怪力を育んだ。
芳幾は国芳の門下で、芳年の兄弟子にあたる。国芳が没した後に遊女屋風俗などを主に描き、幕末から明治初期にかけての浮世絵師の第一人者のひとりとなった。

Kaidomaru was the childhood name of Sakata Kintoki, one of the later Yorimitsu's Retainers. The name "Kintaro" in the folktale is probably more familiar to Japanese people. Born the son of a Yamamba (mountain witch) on Mount Ashigara, Kaidomaru grew up with beasts as friends and developed his supernatural strength.
Yoshiiku was a pupil of Kuniyoshi, and he studied with Yoshitoshi. After Kuniyoshi's death, he became one of the leading ukiyo-e artists from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period by depicting the manners and customs of brothels.
