菊間瓦は、現在の愛媛県今治市菊間地方にて鎌倉時代ごろに製造が始まったいぶし瓦である。掲載作品の中に立ち上る煙は、まさにいぶす過程で立ち上った煙であり、瓦の町としての活気を思わせる。
川瀬巴水は元々日本画家として活躍していたが、大正7年に発表された伊東深水の木版画作品「近江八景」に感銘を受け版画家に転向した。
その後は新版画の第一人者として活躍し、約40年にわたる画業のなかで多くの版画作品を残し、その数は600点にも及ぶ。
巴水の特徴的な青色はその場の空気さえも宿す深い味わいを持ち、「巴水ブルー」と称される。

Kikuma-Kawara is a type of smoked roofing tile that began production around the Kamakura period in the Kikuma region of Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The rising smoke depicted in the works is indeed smoke that rose during the smoking process, evoking the vibrancy of the tile-making town.
KAWASE Hasui initially pursued a career as a Japanese painter but later transitioned to become a prominent printmaking artist after being inspired by ITO Shinsui's woodblock artwork "Eight Views of Omi," published in 1918. As a leading figure in the Shinhanga movement, he produced over 600 prints during his four-decade-long career. Hasui's distinctive use of blue, often referred to as "Hasui Blue," imbues his works with a profound sense of place and atmosphere, capturing the essence of the scenes he depicted.
