埼玉県吉川市はなまずの里として知られる。
波の立たぬ穏やかな川の流れにはヨシが根付き、魚の豊かな棲みかとなっているようだ。川の中ほどにあるのは漁場であろうか。
吉田博は世界中をスケッチしてまわり、帰国後は海外の風景をモチーフとした風景画を多く制作したが、その後国内の図も継続して制作した。この《吉川》は帰国後に制作された一連の作品のひとつである。際だって名所らしい場所が描かれていないように見えるこの作品であるが、旅によって得られた新鮮な目によって、博が改めて魅力を発見した風景だったのではないかと想像したくなる。

吉田博は23歳で中川八郎と共に渡米し、デトロイト美術館で「日本画家水彩画展」を開催。翌年にはボストン美術館で2人展を開催し、大成功させた。吉田博の作品は「空気まで描く」と言われ、全作品が完売。その後渡欧してイギリス、フランス、ドイツ、イタリアなどを巡歴し、世界各地で展覧会を成功させた。
大正9年には渡辺庄三郎と出会い、渡辺木版画舗から木版画の出版を開始。大正14年には吉田版画スタジオを創設して自ら版元となり、多くの作品を世に送り出した。
欧米での知名度が高かったせいか、吉田のアトリエは戦後進駐軍の芸術サロンのようになったという。敗戦直後の昭和20年の秋には、いち早くダグラス・マッカーサー夫人もアトリエを訪問している。米軍の将校クラブでの版画講習会や、参加者をつのってのアトリエ見学会が毎月開かれるなど、吉田作品の人気はきわめて高かったと言えるだろう。

The city of Yoshikawa in Saitama Prefecture is known as the home of catfish.
Reeds are rooted in the calm, wave-free current of the river, which seems to be a rich habitat for fish. The middle of the river may be a fishing ground.
After returning to Japan, Hiroshi Yoshida produced many landscape prints with motifs of foreign landscapes, but he also continued to produce domestic landscapes. The work shown here is one of the prints he produced after returning to Japan. Although this work does not seem to depict any obvious landmarks, it is tempting to imagine that it may have been a landscape that Hiroshi found new and fascinating through the fresh eyes he gained from his travels.

When Yoshida Hiroshi was 23 years old, he went to the USA with Nakagawa Hachiro and held an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In the next year, they succeeded in the exhibition together.
Then, his artworks are expressed that "Yoshida draws the air," and all paintings were sold out.
After that, he traveled around the world and held successful exhibitions.
In 1920, Yoshida met Watanabe Shozaburo, and they began to make Yoshida's prints.
In addition, Yoshida established his own studio in 1925 and began to publish his prints.
Yoshida was famous in the USA, so his studio was used as an art salon by the occupying forces after World War II. In 1945, just after the end of the war, Mrs. MacArthur also visited Yoshida's studio. The workshops and tours of the studio for the officers were often held. This episode shows us how famous and popular he was in the USA.
