大きく描かれた馬の脚越しに風景を見るというこのおもしろい構図は、広重が好んで用いた遠景・近景を巧みに組み合わせた画法である。改めて馬を近くで良く見てみると、その足には草鞋を履いているのが分かる。人間とおそろいの草鞋で共に長距離を旅した馬たちにも思いを馳せたくなる一枚。

様々な作品を描いてきた広重が最後にたどり着いたのは、大胆な構図が特徴の「名所江戸百景」であった。モネやゴッホといった印象派の巨匠たちが模写したことで世界的にも知られている。高い視点から見下ろす俯瞰図や前景に印象的な素材を大きく描く遠近法、様々な摺りの技術を駆使した表現方法など、晩年に至ってなお新しい試みが随所に見られる意欲作である。日頃何気なく目にしている風景が、広重の手に掛かればこうも印象深くなるのかという驚きこそが、江戸の人々を魅了したのではないだろうか。

広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下となった。初め、美人画や役者絵を描いたが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに、数々の風景画を制作、人気絵師として名を馳せた。

This interesting composition, which shows the landscape through the legs of a horse depicted prominently, is using technique of combining distant and near views that Hiroshige favored.
On closer inspection of the horse, we can see that it's wearing straw sandals.
They wore sandals matching those of their human companions and traveled long distances together.

The hit series of Ukiyo-e "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", first published from 1856-1859, including several of the Ukiyo-e masterpieces by Hiroshige. Hiroshige began this project at the age of sixty, and in it, captured many charming scenes of the Edo era through very original, vertically-arranged compositions. Though he intended to create 100 images in the beginning, the overwhelming popularity of this series led the artist to produce a total of 118 prints over 3 years.

Hiroshige was born in 1776, the son of Ando Genemon, a fireman on the Yashirosu river bank in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. At first, Hiroshige painted beauties and portraits of actors. He became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" series.
