「今様美人」は、制作当時風の美人達の様子を季節の移り変わりとともに描いたシリーズ。
掲載作品は新春に神饌を運ぶ美人が描かれている。畳の上に見える絨毯のようなものは、日本では段通（だんつう）と呼ばれ、高温多湿な気候に合わせ綿で織られたものが江戸時代末期ごろから流通していた。

水野年方（1866 - 1908）は、明治時代の浮世絵師・日本画家である。
左官であった父を継ぐべく仕事を手伝ったが、作業の合間に左官道具で描いた絵の繊細さや品の良さを見抜いた出入りの旦那が画家の道を提案し、父もその道を認めた。その後芳年に入門したが一度離れ、陶器画の職人を経た後に再度入門し、その後人気の挿絵画家となった。
年方は当時最も注文が多かった画家と言われ、生真面目な年方はどんな仕事でも依頼されれば断ることが出来なかった。錦絵でも「今様美人」のようなシリーズの他、風俗画を多く手がけ、穏やかで気品のある独自の風俗画を打ち出した。

The 'Modern Beauties' series depicted contemporary beauties alongside the changing seasons at the time of its creation. The featured work portrays a beauty carrying offerings for the New Year. The carpet-like object seen on the tatami mats is known in Japan as 'dantsu,' woven from cotton to suit the hot and humid climate prevalent since the late Edo period.

Mizuno Toshikata (1866 - 1908) was an Ukiyo-e artist and Japanese painter during the Meiji era.
He initially assisted his father, who was a plasterer, but his potential as an artist was recognized by the preferred vendor who saw the delicacy and refinement in the drawings Mizuno sketched using plastering tools during breaks. Encouraged by this, Mizuno's father eventually approved of his son pursuing an artistic career. Mizuno Toshikata first studied under Yoshitoshi, but parted ways temporarily, working as a ceramic painter before returning to Yoshitoshi's tutelage. He later gained popularity as an illustrator.
Mizuno Toshikata was reputedly the most sought-after artist of his time, known for his earnest dedication to any commission he received. In addition to his series like "Modern Beauties" in woodblock prints, he also produced numerous genre paintings, establishing a distinctive style characterized by tranquility and refinement.
