暗闇に浮かび上がる少女像。その足下には一匹の魚がじゃれつくように泳いでいる。掲載作品は、1925年に制作された類似の作品の後、1971年に改めて制作されたものだ。初期の作品においては膝下あたりまでであった構図は、掲載作品では少女の全身となり、背景にも手の込んだ表現が確認できる。また、練達の刷師を失って以後、新作を制作することのなかった長谷川潔にとって、制作年の確認できる作品なかでは最後のものとなっている。

長谷川潔は版画技法を学ぶため1918年にフランスへと渡り、メゾチント(フランス語でマニエール・ノアール)という版画技法を習得した。
元々虚弱体質であった長谷川は、フランスに到着後静養を必要とし、南フランスで3年を過ごした。1925年には初の版画の個展を開き、パリの画壇から高い評価を得ている。
第二次世界大戦中には一時的に収容所に収監されたものの、知人の助けで1ヶ月ほどで解放された。戦後も長谷川の版画技法への鍛錬は続き、帰国せずにパリで没した。

The girl emerges from the darkness, with a fish playfully swimming around her feet. The featured work is a reworked version of a similar piece created in 1925, and was re-produced in 1971. While the composition in the earlier work depicted only the girl up to her knees, the featured work shows the full figure, with a more detailed background. Additionally, this piece is the last known work by Hasegawa Kiyoshi with a confirmed production date, as he did not produce any new works after the loss of his skilled printer. (Note: "point-seché" and "drypoint" are synonymous.)

In 1918, Hasegawa Kiyoshi traveled to France to study printmaking techniques and mastered the mezzotint technique (known in French as manière noire). Originally of fragile health, Hasegawa required rest upon arriving in France and spent three years in the South of France. In 1925, he held his first solo print exhibition and received high praise from the Parisian art world.
During World War II, he was briefly interned in a camp but was released within about a month with the help of acquaintances. After the war, Hasegawa continued to refine his printmaking techniques and passed away in Paris without returning to Japan.
