様々な作品を描いてきた広重が最後にたどり着いたのは、大胆な構図が特徴の「名所江戸百景」であった。モネやゴッホといった印象派の巨匠たちが模写したことで世界的にも知られている。高い視点から見下ろす俯瞰図や前景に印象的な素材を大きく描く遠近法、様々な摺りの技術を駆使した表現方法など、晩年に至ってなお新しい試みが随所に見られる意欲作である。日頃何気なく目にしている風景が、広重の手に掛かればこうも印象深くなるのかという驚きこそが、江戸の人々を魅了したのではないだろうか。
広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下となった。初め、美人画や役者絵を描いたが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに、数々の風景画を制作、人気絵師として名を馳せた。

Hiroshige's innovative spirit shines through in this ambitious work, even in his later years. It features sweeping bird’s-eye views from elevated perspectives, striking use of perspective with prominent foreground elements, and expressive techniques employing various printing methods.
The series offers a remarkable transformation of everyday scenes into deeply memorable ones under Hiroshige’s hand. Perhaps it was this sense of wonder—how familiar landscapes could become so striking—that captivated the people of Edo.
Hiroshige was born in 1797 in Edo's Yayosu Quay as the son of Ando Genemon, a firefighter official under the Tokugawa shogunate. From an early age, he showed a strong affinity for art and, at the age of 15, became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro.
Initially, he created bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and yakusha-e (actor portraits). However, with the launch of his Famous Places in the Eastern Capital series, he transitioned to producing numerous landscape prints, ultimately earning widespread acclaim as a popular ukiyo-e artist.
