芳虎は国芳の門人で、幕末から文明開化期にかけて活躍した絵師の一人である。芳虎が最も活躍したのは明治維新前後の目新しい風俗を描いた横浜絵や開化絵の分野で、当時の多くの日本人にとっては未知の外国風景など多くの作品を残した。

A powerful triptych depicting the battle against the Mongols. The stormy sea in the background amplifies the intensity of the conflict.
Yoshitora was a disciple of Kuniyoshi and one of the prominent artists active from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. His most notable works were in the genre of Yokohama-e and Kaika-e, depicting the novel customs emerging around the time of the Meiji Restoration. He left behind numerous works featuring unfamiliar foreign landscapes, which intrigued many Japanese of that era.
