広重の最晩年の傑作、駿河薩夕之海上は、北斎への挑戦状とも、広重の到達点とも評されるダイナミックな一枚です。現在の静岡県、由比と興津の間にある難所、薩埵峠からの絶景を描いています。
この作品の最大の主役は、大きくせり出す波です。北斎を強く意識したとされるこの波の描写は、しぶきを上げながら、今まさに砕け散ろうとする瞬間を捉えています。しかし、北斎の波が襲いかかる怪物のような恐怖を感じさせるのに対し、広重の波はどこか優美なリズムを持ち、自然の力強さを描きつつも画面全体には心地よい調和が保たれています。
波の激しい「動」に対し、背景にどっしりと構える富士山は、透き通るような静寂を湛えた「静」として描かれています。この対比が、画面に圧倒的な奥行きと緊張感を与えています。また、荒れ狂う海の上を悠然と舞う二羽の千鳥が、観る者の視線を遠くの水平線へと導き、大自然のスケール感を際立たせる見事なアクセントになっています。

The Sea off Satta in Suruga Province, one of Hiroshige’s late masterpieces, is often described both as a bold challenge to Hokusai and as the culmination of Hiroshige’s artistic achievement. The print depicts the dramatic seascape viewed from Satta Pass, a treacherous stretch of coastline between present-day Yui and Okitsu in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The true protagonist of this composition is the massive wave surging in from the left side of the picture. Widely believed to have been created with Hokusai in mind, the wave rises with spray shaped like outstretched fingers, captured at the very moment it is about to crash against the rocks. Yet while Hokusai’s waves often evoke the terror of a monstrous force attacking the viewer, Hiroshige’s wave possesses a graceful rhythm. It conveys the raw power of nature while maintaining a sense of harmony across the entire composition.

In contrast to this violent movement, Mount Fuji stands solid and immovable in the background, rendered as a presence of crystalline stillness. This interplay between dynamic motion and serene calm lends the image a striking depth and tension. Two plovers gliding effortlessly above the turbulent sea guide the viewer’s gaze toward the distant horizon, serving as a subtle yet brilliant accent that amplifies the vast scale of the natural world.
