木曽六十九駅 下諏訪は、江戸時代の名所案内と人気キャラクターを掛け合わせた、当時のファン心理をくすぐる粋な作品です。この絵がなぜ「犬飼現八」を描いているかというと、下諏訪宿の近くにある名水「犬飼ノ清水」の名前にちなんだ「言葉遊び」が理由です。
画面には里見八犬伝で絶大な人気を誇った八犬士の一人、犬飼現八が力強く描かれています。背景には「犬飼ノ清水」の風景が添えられており、メインの現八の姿とセットで楽しむ構成になっています。

The reason Inukai Genpachi is featured here lies in a clever "wordplay" on Inukai-no-shimizu (the Spring of Inukai), a famous water source located near the Shimosuwa station.
The print dynamically depicts Genpachi, one of the eight heroes from the wildly popular novel The Eight Dog Chronicles (Nansō Satomi Hakkenden). With the landscape of the Inukai Spring tucked into the background, the composition allows the viewer to enjoy both the legendary warrior and the local landmark as a single, integrated scene.
