通俗水滸伝は、中国の小説「水滸伝」に登場する豪傑たちを描いた人気シリーズ。
大胆な構図と躍動感あふれる人物表現、誇張された筋肉描写や緻密な刺青表現によって、英雄たちの力強さと個性が鮮やかに描き出されている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden is a popular series depicting the heroic figures from the Chinese novel Water Margin.
Through bold compositions, dynamic portrayals of figures, exaggerated muscular forms, and intricately rendered tattoos, the strength and individuality of each hero are vividly expressed.

Kuniyoshi was a pupil of Toyokuni. Early in his career, he struggled to gain recognition and was overshadowed by senior pupils such as Kunisada. However, around the Bunsei era, his series 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden gained widespread acclaim, earning him the title “Kuniyoshi of warrior prints” and establishing his reputation as a leading artist.
Thereafter, with his rich imagination, innovative sense of design, bold and unconventional ideas, and solid draftsmanship, Kuniyoshi produced numerous works that transcend the conventional boundaries of ukiyo-e.
