年方は芳年門下で実質的な一門の後継者に推された。年方は穏やかで気品のある独自の風俗画を打ち出した。
文芸倶楽部では13年間に52枚の口絵を描き、多くの文学小説の単行本にも挿絵をよせるなど、人気挿絵画家となった。「寂光院」は、三宅青軒の小説「寂光院」の口絵。平清盛の娘であり、安徳天皇の母である平徳子が華麗な女房装束で描かれている。奥には晩年の姿、壇ノ浦の戦いで生き残り、尼となって京都の寂光院で余生を過ごす様子を描いている。

Although Kuchi-e was produced as an appendix to the book, the quality is very high, and the delicate lines are no less than those of ukiyo-e.
Toshikata was a follower of Yoshitoshi and was nominated as the successor of the family. Toshikata developed his own unique style of genre painting with gentle elegance.
He became a popular illustrator at the Bungei Club, where he painted 52 illustrations in 13 years, and also contributed illustrations to many books of literary novels.
