Yoshitora, a disciple of Kuniyoshi, was one of the leading artists active from the late Edo period into the Meiji period. He was especially known for his Yokohama-e and Kaika-e, which depicted the novel customs and fashions emerging around the Meiji Restoration. His works included numerous depictions of foreign landscapes unfamiliar to most Japanese of the time.
