題名には「源平大合戦」とあるが、実はこの作品は豊臣秀吉と明智光秀による「山崎の戦い」が描かれたものである。記載された武将の名は架空の名に置き換えられている。中央で攻撃を受けるのは明智軍の明智光近で、そこに掴みかかるのは片桐且元と考えられている。
国綱は豊国の門人で、作画期は文政から万延の頃にかけてとされている。武者絵等においてその技量を発揮した。

Although the title says "The Great Battle Between the Minamoto and the Taira Clans", this work actually depicts "The battle at Yamazaki" that broke out between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide.
The warlord's name is replaced by a fictitious name, but it is implicitly clear which warlord is being referred to.
The one being attacked in the center is thought to be Akechi Mitsuchika of the Akechi army, and the one grabbing at him is thought to be Katagiri Katsumoto.
Kunitsuna was one of the pupils of Toyokuni the 1st and was active from c.1818~1860.
He had the talent to create the artworks of the warriors.
