文政12年に刊行された柳亭種彦による長編の合巻「偐紫田舎源氏」は大ベストセラーとなる。「源氏物語」を翻案し、光源氏に当たる将軍足利義政の子息足利光氏が活躍するという内容で、当時の江戸城大奥における徳川将軍の華やかな生活にも仮託された内容であった。「偐紫田舎源氏」を描いた絢爛豪華な浮世絵も制作され当時大変な人気となった。

“The False Murasaki’s Rustic Genji” (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Tanehiko Ryutei was published in 1837 and became a huge bestseller. It was an adaptation of "The Tale of Genji," in which Ashikaga Mitsuji, the son of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who was the equivalent of Hikaru Genji, played an active role, and was also a metaphor for the glamorous life of the Tokugawa shogun in the inner palace of Edo Castle at the time. Gorgeous ukiyoe depicting the "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" were also produced and became very popular.
