The Tales of Genji is the greatest novel in classical Japanese literature, and arguably. It was written in the first decade of the eleventh century by Lady Murasaki and relates the womanizing exploits of Prince Genji. Each of the fifty-four chapters of the novel is named and is associated.
The story of "Kezori" is based on a real incident involving a gang of seven smugglers who were caught in Nagasaki and were nose-cutted and put in the stocks for three days in Ôsaka in the 10th lunar month of 1718. Chikamatsu Monzaemon immediately adapted this event for the puppet theater, writing the drama "Hakata Kojorô Nami Makura", which was staged at the Takemotoza in the 11th lunar month of 1718. The Kabuki had to wait up to the 7th lunar month of 1776.
