国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てず、しばらくは不遇であった。文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され、人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。
「源氏雲浮世画合」は源氏物語54帖と、日本古来からの「故事」「浮世話」を結びつけて描かれた連作である。
畠山 重忠は、平安時代末期から鎌倉時代初期の武将。鎌倉幕府の有力御家人。源頼朝の挙兵に際して当初は敵対するが、のちに臣従して治承・寿永の乱で活躍、知勇兼備の武将として常に先陣を務め、幕府創業の功臣として重きをなした。しかし、頼朝の没後に実権を握った初代執権・北条時政の謀略によって謀反の疑いをかけられて子とともに討たれた（畠山重忠の乱）存命中から武勇の誉れ高く、その清廉潔白な人柄で「坂東武士の鑑」と称された。

The Tales of Genji is the greatest novel in classical Japanese literature, and arguably. It was written in the first decade of the eleventh century by Lady Murasaki and relates the womanizing exploits of Prince Genji. Each of the fifty-four chapters of the novel is named and is associated.
Hatakeyama Shigetada was a samurai who fought in the Gempei War, in Japan. Originally fighting for the Taira clan, he switched sides to the Minamoto clan for the battle of Dan-no-ura, and ended the war on the winning side.
