昇雲は東陽堂の絵画部員として入社。以降毎号のように、「山本松谷」の名義で、「風俗画報』に石版画の挿絵を描くようになった。「風俗画報」の仕事を中心に出版文化の中で活躍する中、日本画家として展覧会への出品も度々行った。そして昇雲の代表作といえるのが、明治39年から明治42年にかけて、大黒屋平吉から刊行された美人画の「いま姿」シリーズである。「いま姿」には彫り摺り共に最高の技術が施され、歌川派とは異なる新しい個性を持つ意欲作となった。

Shoun joined Toyo-Do as a member of the painting department. From then on, he began to draw lithograph illustrations for Fuzoku-Gaho under the name "Yamamoto Shokoku" in every issue. While he was active in the publishing culture, mainly through his work for the magazine "Fuzoku-Gaho," he also frequently participated in exhibitions as a Japanese-style painter. One of Shoun's representative works is the "Imasugata (Lady in Modern Style)" series of beauty paintings published by Daikokuya Heikichi from 1906 to 1909. In "Imasugata (Lady in Modern Style)," he applied the highest techniques and created an ambitious work with a new personality different from the Utagawa School.
