Bartlet had trained the paintings and Etching at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and went on to study in Paris.
In 1915, he traveled to Asia and visited Japan. He showed his sketches and watercolor drawings to Watanabe Shozaburo, and they started publishing of the woodcut prints in 1916. The motif was the landscape in Asia and Japan. He used unique right blue, and it blew a new wind toward the Japanese prints.
