恩地孝四郎は、木版画、装幀、写真など様々な分野で活躍した作家である。版画においては、抽象画の創始者であるワシリー・カンディンスキーらの影響を受けた。第二次世界大戦後はもっぱら抽象版画に傾倒し、葉や紐、木片などを用いる手法マルチブロックも編み出した。日本における最初期の抽象版画の先駆者として前衛性が高く評価されている。
恩地孝四郎作品は当時は欧米でのみ高い評価を得ており、ほとんどの作品が海外に流出している。またすべてのエディション数を摺っていないことも多く、非常に希少性が高い。

Onchi Koshiro was an artist active in a variety of fields, including woodblock prints, book designs, and photography. In the printmaking field, he was influenced by Wassily Kandinsky, the founder of abstract painting. After World War II, he devoted himself exclusively to abstract prints and also developed the multi-block technique using leaves, strings, and pieces of wood. As a pioneer of abstract print in Japan, he is highly regarded for his avant-garde style.
