国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てず、しばらくは不遇であった。文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され、人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。
源義経は、家来の武蔵坊弁慶らと逃避行を続ける。北陸道安宅の関で彼らを待っていたのは、関守富樫左衛門。身を隠しきれない義経、主君を助けようと必死の弁慶、その強い思いにふれる富樫。ぶつかり合う三人の立場と心。終始気の抜けない名場面が続く。
